what it is
A wireless doorbell that integrates exclusively with Apple’s Homekit.
Challenge
We were charged to design a doorbell camera that visually integrates with people’s homes while being quick and easy to install.
-
We created a solution that looks like it is part of the hardware around the house. A solid footing integrates the doorbell on the wall of the house and creates the impression of impermeability.
All functional components are concealed behind a coherent black lens emphasising the elements the user cares about: The lens and the ringer button.
-
The design team established a visual vocabulary based on commonly found hardware around the house such as door locks and sconces and common materials used such as stucco and metal.
Simultaneously we researched and identified materials and manufacturing methods that resembled their appearance while permitting for the optical, thermal, protective and wireless properties required by a complex electronic product such as a doorbell camera.
-
We conducted a deep dive into customer and professional reviews to identify the core differentiators to drive design. The primary goal for the product architecture was to facilitate easy end-user installation. We audited the best-in-class hardware and software installation processes and streamlined it by means of iterative development and testing. We designed an installation strategy that was intuitive, cost effective and robust. We collaborated closely with Belkin team to establish the necessary adjustability of the camera based on the camera’s viewing angle.
-
The out-of-box experience and the product architecture were developed simultaneously to mutually support a supremely easy installation.
We conducted a deep audit of competitive installation processes with the goal of identifying pain points.
By means of simultaneous and iterative development on both the product and the out-of-box experience we resolved the pain points and developed a conceptual OBX to support an easy installation process for the end user.
