What it is
Wemo is Belkin’s family of Smart Home Products. The Wemo Insight was the first wirelessly controlled outlet ever.
WeMo lets you control your electronic devices remotely. You can turn them on and off, adjust them, put them on timers and watch and change their status with the simple, intuitive WeMo app on your iPhone.
Challenge
Smart home devices were in their infancy and controlling your home from the phone was new to people. We needed to create a very clear visual kinship of product and app in order to explain.
We also needed to reduce all barriers to entry that might keep Insight switches from being ubiquitous in the home. We were looking to develop a product that costs $50 and can be installed in 5 minutes.
We needed to minimize all barriers to entry into the Wemo system. The Wemo products needed to be easy to afford, quick to install and a pleasure to use .

Packaging and App are designed to guide the user through the installation process. It should not take longer than 5 minutes to set up a Wemo.

The initial product was the Wemo Insight Switch. It was the first wirelessly controlled outlet and spearheaded the product category. Launched before Alexa and other AIs it allowed people to remotely controlled the outlet or set routines based on presence, time of day or interaction with other Wemo devices. IFTTT integration allowed for complex routines based on information readily available on the web.

We quickly grew the Wemo family into home awareness. Presence sensors, door and window sensors, smoke and motion sensors would help people understand the status of their home and their loved ones. Outdoor lighting solutions would extend the reach of the family outside of the house. At this time new Wemo products are being created.
